If you have never been to Gettysburg you are missing quite a bit of history. Now I am not a history buff, but I do know how important this little town was in the American Civil War history.
Today the relaxing and beautiful countryside has over 3,500 acres of National Military Park with over 3,000 markers and monuments. The quiet cemetary where Lincoln spoke in 1863 has continued to be a shrine for America and the world. You can also view the home of General Dwight D. Eisenhower who was the nations 34th. president. You will note the prominate colors of green and pink which were the main color palate of his late years. I'm sure it will bring back memories to a lot of you.
This is also the home of the Gettysburg College and the Gettysburg Theological Seminary School.
Tours are available via way of bus with a guide or you can do your own audio tour which would be at your own pace. You will enjoy all the neat little shops and tea rooms that are in downtown Gettysburg. There is a hotel right on the square that is called the Gettysburg Hotel that may be something you would enjoy. The "Pub" has a really neat menu and was just rebuilt in the last 5 years after a fire that totally demolished the building. They rebuilt the establishment to the "old" look. Great burgers, soups, onion rings, etc. Neat interior where you can greet and meet other folks enjoying the area or the locals who stop for lunch. Down Steinwehr Ave you will find the Dobbin House that has a unique tavern, way down under. You can feel the coolness of the stone walls as you sit at the period tables and have a cold brew and casual supper. If you want to really experience something unique go upstairs to on of the "bedrooms" for dinner. You will eat at a "bed" frame and period furniture-really different!
If you go to the Farnsworth House you can even attend a Ghost Story and walk. I did this one night and my hair stood on end by the end of the evening. Great food here too and a neat pub.
If you like antiques, you will find various establishments here to look and find that special item.
Outside of Gettysburg, off of 97S you will find the Gettysburg Village that flourishes with discount shopping, craft stores, food, hotel and entertainment.
Route 30 W will take you to Calodonia State Park if you haven't had enough hiking.
Towards Fairfield you will find the Land of Little Horses. Minature horses which provide a show and time to pet.
Further north, you will find the orchards of Adams County. Acres and acres of orchards. Apples-lots of apples. The South Mountain Fair is held in the fall of the year. September is the time you will smell the applesauce and cider being cooked.
Come Visit-This might be where you want to live!
